Solderless builds you can undo - the no-commitment way in.
Every build in this series goes together on a solderless breadboard. Push the parts into the holes, follow the rows, and you are making noise in about twenty minutes - or forty for the six-voice Hive, which is the big one. Nothing is permanent, so a wrong part is a two-second fix rather than a desolder.
Each one shares a circuit family with the Dead-Bug Series, so when a build earns a permanent home the soldered version is already written. Never touched a breadboard? Start with the 555 Optical Theremin - the only one here with a speaker wired straight in, so it makes a noise on its own without an amp, and the only one you can actually silence.

Atari Punk Console: The NE556 Stepped Tone Generator on a Breadboard
build Forrest Mims' stepped tone generator - two knobs, one chip, and a pitch that jumps in hard steps instead of sliding - on a breadboard in about twenty minutes. A row-by-row recipe, a symptom-by-symptom troubleshooting table, and an optional photoresistor mod that puts it under light control.
Optical Theremin: A Light-Controlled CD40106 on a Breadboard
a light-controlled oscillator on one CD40106 - wave a hand over the photoresistor and the pitch follows your shadow. Seventeen steps, no soldering at all, about fifteen minutes. Row-by-row recipe, troubleshooting table, then mods to add a second voice, a power LED and range pots.

Bazz Fuss: A One-Transistor Fuzz on a Breadboard
about the smallest real fuzz there is - one transistor, one diode, one resistor, two caps - and the first pedal in the series you plug a guitar into. Ten minutes on a breadboard, with a printable two-page build sheet as the full build doc and parts list, plus a nastier Darlington version.
555 Optical Theremin: Two Photocells on a 555 Astable
one 555, two photocells and a speaker. The cells sit in series as the timing resistor, so either hand moves the pitch and both together move it further - and cupping both stops the note dead instead of letting it sag, which is what makes it playable. Super Simple Oscillator: A One-Transistor Sawtooth on a Breadboard
Look Mum No Computer's first-synth classic - one 2N3904 run backwards into reverse avalanche, two resistors, a cap, a pot and an LED that flashes on every dump. Sixteen steps, no soldering, and the one build in the series that wants 12 to 18 volts instead of 9. Dual-Wave LFO: Triangle and Square on One NE5532
the effect behind the effect - a triangle and a square from the two halves of one op-amp, chasing each other from 2.5 to 8 Hz, with a rate knob and a blend knob that morphs between the shapes. The first build in the series that makes no sound on its own: it exists to wobble the others. Opto Duet on a Breadboard
two 555s chained by light instead of copper. One sets the tempo, the other makes the tone, and a home-made vactrol - an LED and a cell sealed face to face - lets the slow one bend the pitch of the fast one. A third cell sits across the same node with its face out, so your hand plays it too. Thirty-two steps grouped by part, a vactrol you build first, and the only soldering is its four leads.
Mood Plush: A Squeeze-Triggered CD4093 Synth That Gets Worked Up
a piezo, a 4093 and a 555 arranged so that every squeeze chirps a little higher and lights an eye, and the whole mood lives in one capacitor that drains back to silence on its own. A home-made vactrol turns the mood voltage into pitch, so the eye and the voice are the same signal.
